JORDAN BRAND | RUSSELL WESTBROOK MVP "WHY NOT ZERO?"
The story of the basketball summer in 2016 was how Kevin Durant abandoned Russell Westbrook for the Golden State Warriors. With that decision, the stage was set for one of the NBA’s newest and most personal rivalries. The world was waiting to see how Russell Westbrook would respond, now that he was the lone superstar in OKC. When the season began, Russell Westbrook did not disappoint, responding with one of the best season in NBA history. Outside of his passionate and energized play, Westbrook became the first player to average a triple-double since 1963, scored a record 42 triple-doubles and secured the highest usage rate ever with 41.7% all while taking the Thunder to the playoffs single-handedly. His efforts earned him the league’s MVP Award. As Jordan Brand’s top athlete and the future of the brand, we wanted to celebrate this moment and show the world just how rare and other worldly Westbrook’s accomplishments were.
If you dig into the numbers behind Westbrook’s season, they are crazy. What this superstar was able to achieve with his passion and will can’t be explained. To the average fan, you had to explain just how great his season was. What better way to do that than with an educational video in the style of Schoolhouse Rock performed by Phonte of Little Brother. To explain this feat, we created an animated film that broke down Westbrook’s historic season through the numbers. But even, when you break down the analytics, there is only one number that really matters, 0, Westbrook’s jersey number. The result was a fun film that contributed to the conversation of this historic moment, reaffirmed Jordan Brand’s support of its top athlete and authentic connection to basketball culture.
